The Mockingbird has been open for some time at The Custard Factory in Digbeth. I went along back in December for a Yelp event where we took over a screen to watch The Nighmare Before Christmas and drink tequila cocktails! I didn't really get a look at the bar but I liked the idea of a super-independent cinema.
When the guys from Big Papa's announced they were taking over I was super excited to go down and check out what they'd done with the place. I went to the launch party last week to see the re-launched bar and bistro area, try a few cocktails and sample the food.
There were a few samples doing the rounds. I tried the ribs, which were sweet and tender, the buttermilk fried chicken, which was hot, tender, with a crunchy coating and served with a gorgeous parsley dip. There was also pork belly with beetroot- an exciting step away from their usual American-inspired food. Finally, a courgette fritter which was tasty but probably needs something else with it when served up as a proper dish.
The food was as good, if not better than it was at The Sunflower Lounge. I've always been a big fan of the Big Papas duo and it's great to see them have the opportunity to let loose in their own kitchen!
But of course, it's a bar too and they aren't just serving any old drinks. New and interesting beers and ciders are served alongside cocktails. I tried a bit of Vicky's smoked beer which had a curious ham type taste to it!
As well as a sample of a delicious creamy concoction (vodka, chocolate and coffee I believe), Edd and I tried some cocktails off the menu.
The Bourbon Smash was made with Bourbon, mint, lime and lemon juices.
The Rumspresso Martini was a fun twist on the classic, made with rum, espresso and chocolate liquor.
The cocktails were well presented, made with good quality ingredients and were not too sweet. They are well priced at around £7. Definitely a new spot for cocktails.
Clearly some animated foodie chat going on here!
I love the simple but stylish interior, with cool signs and lights everywhere!
The bistro menu is launching this week with brunch and dinner being served.
Excitingly, street food favourites Vegan Grindhouse will be taking over the kitchen every Monday for a whole day of vegetarian and vegan food.
I'm really excited to see how The Mockingbird settles in now it has been relaunched. I'll be back there soon for a full review of the food menu.

I was invited to the relaunch of The Mockingbird and had some free samples of food and a glass of fizz on arrival. I paid for the rest of my drinks and was not obliged to write a blog post.
